What is Emotional Intelligence?

What is the difference between EQ and EI?

Emotional intelligence, EI (otherwise known as emotional quotient or EQ), is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions to communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. EQ encompasses so much more than just self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. EQ is the ability to use AWARENESS of triggers, emotions, impact, insight, and motivations into practice as a guide to fulfilling goals that align with purpose.

EQ encompasses all senses, beyond the mind, from body language to multi-sensory perception, intuition, and multiple intelligences. Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to use awareness of thoughts and emotions to help with various cognitive tasks such as problem-solving. The emotionally intelligent person can capitalize on their changing moods to fit the task at hand. Understanding emotions are deciphering emotion and language and appreciating the complexities of interactions. As a result, the emotionally intelligent person can control their emotions, even unpleasant ones, and use them to accomplish their objectives.

How can I become more conscious about EQ in my everyday life?

Here is a quick test to see if you are conscious about using EQ in your everyday life.

✔️ Do you avoid people to not have a conversation with them?

✔️ Do you go over conversations over and over again in your mind?

✔️ Have you ever told someone their project was great because you didn’t want to get into more dialog over what you think should be changed?

✔️Do you tell people what you think of them, and if they have a problem with that, then that is their problem to deal with?

✔️Have you ever thought, “if I didn’t have to deal with others, then my life would go so much smoother.”

✔️Have you ever had a conversation or interaction with someone and realized you just checked out?

✔️Have you ever said, “I need a drink.”?

✔️Have you ever thought, “if everyone just did what I told them to do, the way I told them to do it, then everything would go a lot better.”

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, let’s explore how increasing your EQ can bring a whole different experience to your organization, your mental and physical health, and your life overall. The impulse to distant, shun, be furious, or righteous can appear to be empowering at times. According to studies, these disengaging emotions cause energy surges. When you have an energy surge, chemicals like adrenaline enter your system; your heart rate goes up, your blood flow goes up, your oxygen intake decreases, and your muscles stiffen up, all negatively impacting your heart health. Avoiding emotions can lead to problems with memory, anger, anxiety, self-esteem, sadness, and an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease. Suppressing your emotions or bottling up emotions creates a 30 percent higher chance of dying prematurely, according to a Harvard School of Public Health and University of Rochester study. Therefore, I invite you to hop on a call with me to see where introducing more Emotional Awareness can benefit you in your day-to-day experiences. Recognize how increasing EQ can transform how you may be running away from life into welcoming it in by identifying all the opportunities to support retention, reengagement, growth, relationship management, and profitability.
